Description

Some things just never go out of style, and that is the case for this tour that is simply a pure classic. The tour takes you out on a comfortable sightseeing ship to see the puffins and other sea birds in their natural habitat of the islands of Akurey and Lundey.

During this one to one & half hour tour our guide and captain will take you out so you can witness the fascinating puffins during their breeding season in Iceland. An incredible variety of sea birds can also be seen living side by side on these small islands just off the coast of Reykjavik. Guillemots, razorbills, cormorants and the widely travelled arctic tern are just a few of the species that are known to inhabit these rocky outcrops. The summer skies are full of life making it the perfect time to explore the bay and visit the birds.

The expert bird watching guide will tell you tales and facts about the birds and their surroundings, commenting on their behaviours, explaining their life histories and detailing the struggles they face living here in the North Atlantic. The island's shores are rocky but our captains know the best spots to get closer to the puffins in their natural habitat. If the weather is right we might even turn off the engines so that you can enjoy the nature better and listen to the bird's calls.

The tour departs four times a day in summer (from the 15th of May to the 15th of August) from the Old Harbour in downtown Reykjavík, which is within walking distance of most hotels in Reykjavík (but we also offer pick up for this tour).

Itinerary

Engey, Akurey, Lundey

Depending on the tides, we will either visit Engey, Akureyri or Lundey. These are the three islands just off Reykjavík where the birds are known to breed on during summer. The islands are protected so we are unable to set foot on them, however the captain will sail as close as possible, without disturbing any natural behaviour. Binoculars are available on board for those who want to use them.

What's included

  • Use of raincoats
  • Use of binoculars
  • Excellent guidance

What do I need to bring

  • Tripod for better camera stability (if taking photographs)
  • A good zoom lens for close up photographs (if taking photographs)

Important information

The deck on the boat can be slippery. We recommend wearing good sturdy footwear. For optimal viewing and a more enjoyable cruise this tour is weather dependent.
