Whale Safari Guides

Species seen today: Humpback whale, minke whale, white-beaked dolphin, harbour porpoise

Birds seen today: Atlantic puffin, northern gannet, kittiwake, northern fulmar, eider duck, manx shearwater, black guillemot, european shag

10:00 - It was a grey day but calm seas with a bit of swell. We stopped off at Akurey and watched the puffins in the water and on land. They came incredibly close at times and after we got our fill we ventured on. After some sailing we spotted a pod of 7 white beaked dolphins and then more and more! We watched them for a bit and then headed on to find another species. We were lucky and found a minke whale! This individual came up twice but then vanished. We eventually had to head back when we ran out of time.

14:00 - It was raining as we left the marina but it soon stopped, giving us high hopes for our whale watching tour. We drove out for around 20 minutes after a quick visit to the puffins in Akurey, and we spotted the first group of white beaked dolphins, around 15 of them. We stayed with them for a while but shortly afterwards we saw not far from us the distinctive dorsal fin of a humpback whale, and even though it dived for long periods, it could be seen by everybody on the boat. We found after that another group of dolphins, around 7 individuals. They were active, swimming repeteadly next to the boat. Coming into harbour, we saw harbour porpoises, 3 of them.

15:00 - In the afternoon the sea was now extremely calm and we were excited to see what was in the bay. We once again stopped at Akurey and had puffins all around us. Then we headed further out and once again spotted 9 white beaked dolphins. There were a few pods around us and we could spot fins surrounding us in all directions. It was hard to say how many were around us but probably 10-15. They were quite curious and came extremely close to the boat always swimming underneath us. We eventually decided to head on and see if we could find more species but only saw a minke whale a few timnes before we ran out time.
