Whale Diary

10:00 - We headed out in the sunny bay, starting off by checking the puffin islands. After that we headed out to sea in search for cetaceans. We spotted a blow in the distance and went to check it out. It was a humpback whale. It was accompanied by a large pod of white beaked dolphins, roughly 50 of them spread out. They were playing and feeding as well as interacting with the humpback whale. They were close to each other and put on an extraordinary show for us right next to the boat. The humpback whale was on its back several times and rolled around, putting pectorial fins in the air and tail fluke sideways. Dolphins were jumping everywhere and it was really hard to know where to put our attention. After an unforgettable interaction we headed back to the harbour, with very happy passengers.

16:00 - We started out near Hvalfjördur to shelter from the rough sea and headed back to the spot where the whales were spotted this morning. After a while we encountered a huge bait ball with a feeding frenzy of arctic terns. A passenger spotted the back of a whale, but it never resurfaced. After the proper viking experience we set sail back to the puffin islands. We headed back to the harbour and gave out complimentary tickets.
