Whale Diary

10:00 - This morning's tour was amazing! After stopping for puffins, we headed out into the bay. It didn't take long to find our first whale and it was a breaching humpback whale! This individual was obviously very energetic because it breached multiple times and then started slapping the water with its pectoral fin. We watched its performance for a while before it got tired. We then moved on to another area and found a second humpback resting. It came up to the boat quite close a few times. Then we saw a thrid humpback that was really showing off its tail to us, doing nice fluke dives. Then before we headed back in to the harbour we found a fourth humpback that came so close to the boat we could see its bright white pectoral fins through the water! An incredible start to the day!

12:00 - We started with good weather conditions, the sea was a little bumpy, but besides that it was good. As we headed out we spotted a small fin, it was the dorsal fin of a Harbour Porpoise. But it wasn't just one, there were 6 of them ! They sufaced a few times and were very interested in us. They swam around us and then followed us as we left. Not long after we saw a blow in the distance and headed towards it. It was a very friendly and calm Humpback Whale which swam next to us and fluked very nicely. We also saw 2 other Humpbacks next to other boats, but stuck with ours. So we had 2 to watch and one that was close to us. But all good things come to an end, so we had to head back to the harbour. In total we saw 3 Humpbacks.

14:00 - In the afternoon, the wind had picked up a bit but we were not disappointed by the whales! After a stop to see the puffins, we sailed out and soon found 2 humpback whales in one small area. They were surfacing often but as there were already a lot of other boats around, we moved on to explore more of the bay. We quickly found a third and then fourth and fifth humpbacks! These three were spread out over a larger area but they were all doing nice fluke dives and were coming up close to the boat multiple times. Their bright white pectoral fins were shining through the water! On our way back in to the harbour, we found a sixth humpback! This one was sleeping at the surface, coming up for breath regularly but not doing any deep dives. We left it to sleep peacefully and headed back into the harbour. Six humpbacks in 2 hours made for a great tour!

16:00 - The conditions were a little rougher than the tour before, but the guests had still fun. We checked the places we last had seen the Humpbacks, but no luck, so we looked around our other spots they are likely to be seen, and we were lucky. We saw a blow and headed straight towards it. When we arrived it was a very nice Humpback Whale. He was very calm at first. Surfaced and fluked. Then he began to swim faster and did some pretty energetic flukedives. Then he became calmer again and disappeared for a while. Then he surprised us by coming up pretty close to the boat and then turned directly towards us! Went down, came up again right next to the boat, went down and looked at us, came up right behind our boat and then did a very nice flukedive again. This was his goodbye for us, because we had to head back. Thank you Humpie :)

20:00 - This evening started out a bit windy and bumpy but calmed down as we were out in the bay so we could enjoy our trip and the beautiful sunset. We headed out to an area where whales had been seen by another boat and soon after arriving found a humpback whale. We stayed with this individual for the whole tour as it was feeding and showing off its tail nicely for us. Twice the whale came up next to our boat on its side with its pectoral fin high in the air so we could see the white fin and the grooves on its belly, full of food! Most of the time, the whale was being followed by many arctic terns, grabbing all the fish that escaped the whales mouth. It was a great tour to end the day.
