Whale Diary

10:00 - Amazing morning of whale watching! The skies were looking a bit gray but that did not affect our hopes as we had been having very good sightings in the past days. And we got lucky really quicky! Indeed, a short distance after leaving port, we spotted to the South, a humpback whale breaching! We sailed towards it, and we saw that it was Davy Jones and in a pair with another one, possibly Pep but we could not confirm. We stayed with them for a while, and then we moved on, and we found another pair of humpbacks, and another one on its own. So total humpback count, 5 individuals. As we sailed looking for these whales, we saw 4 minke whales, and a small pod of harbour porpoises, around 6 of them. It was great!

13:00 - The bay was getting a little bit bumpy this afternoon as the wind was picking up but we still headed out very optimistic. As we went out into the bay, we first spotted a pod of 4 harbour porpoises however they were not very keen on being watched. We carried on and searched far and wide but were not seeing anything until we finally saw a blow! We found a humpback whale! It was Davy Jones II. He was very curious of our Classic boat, Eldey, coming super close and watching the passengers as they were all watching him. He swam around them a few times and we were able to see his white pectoral fins through the water! Then suddenly he decided he had had enough and started to swim away. We took this as our cue to head back to the harbour after a very successful tour!

15:00 - This afternoon, the wind had picked up a bit making our tour out in the bay a bit bumpy! We headed straight back to the area where we had just seen the animals in the last tour. On our way there we saw a pod of 5 harbour porpoises. After a little bit of searching, we found Davy Jones II the humpback whale. Unfortunately we only managed to see him a few times before he dove away and disappeared. We waited for him for a while but could not see him again. We tried searching some new areas and found a big group of shearwaters with 2 minke whales feeding underneath. With the seas getting very wavy and the minkes being quite elusive, we only were able to see them a few times as well. Then we had to start heading back to the harbour but on our way we saw another 5 harbour porpoises. As our sightings of the animals weren't the best, we offered our passengers complimentary tickets to come again on a classic tour.
