Whale Diary

10:00 - After having a bit of a rough weather in the past few days, today started with some amazingly calm seas. We went out on our RIB boat and did a quick stop at Akurey island to see some puffins resting by the island. We then ventured further into the bay and started our cetacean sightings with a pod of around 30 white-beaked dolphins who were very energetic and social, performing breaches and approaching our boat´s bow. After the dolphins, we continued our search for more wildlife, coming across various minke whales, and a small group of 1 or 2 harbour porpoises. This animals are naturally shier than our other species and we didn´t stop long with them. However, we then found a pair of humpback whales, who were socializing with a group of white-beaked dolphins, showing us their head fins and generally being very pleasant to be with. Overall, this was an amazing trip!

14:00 - With the calm sea conditions continuing into the afternoon, we headed back out into the bay full of optimism for another exciting tour. Not long after leaving the harbor, we were greeted by a wonderful sight: a group of 3 humpback whales but this time not all together, two at the same area and other alone. They surfaced calmly around the boat, showing their impressive blows and beautiful tail flukes, we could also see the pectoral fins of one individual. It was a fantastic way to begin the trip! Later we saw 1 minke whale alone, but also very calm as well and appearing very close to our boats. For ending our tour we saw a small pod o 6 white beaked dolphins, constantly changing directions but still giving us the opportunity to see them in detail. Before we entered into the harbor of course we had the time to pass close to the puffin colony in Akurey and they were there. Our beloved puffins, both at the surface of the water and on land. What amazing way to finish the week!
