Whale Diary

10:00 - We started the tour with a very clear sky and excited clients. With a slight breeze from the north west, we headed out to Faxaflói bay and came across one humpback whale that was traveling north. We spend some time with it and got a great look at its fluke when it went for a deeper dive. On our way back to Reykjavik we stopped at Akurey for a quick visit to the puffins on.

12:00 - This sunny midday we ventured out into the bay to see what was in store for us. We decided to stop for the puffins on the way back as the tide would be higher meaning we could get closer to the island! So we sailed out into the bay stopping in a few hotspots where we know the animals like to be. After some sailing we spotted a blow! We sailed towards it but this individual was quite elusive. We stayed searching for a bit but sadly with no luck. We then continued our search before having to set course back to harbour. On the way back, just as planned the tide was high and we stopped at Akurey! We got incredibly close to the puffins, enjoyed them in the sun and then headed back home.

14:00 - We left Reykjavík's old harbour into Flaxaflói Bay hoping to find some of the whales that we´d seen earlier in the day (or even, new individuals!). The wind and the waves had picked up, which meant our speedboat was breaking through the waves to get us to our destination. However, this didn´t seem to bother our passengers, who were having fun has our boats speeded through the waves. Eventually, we found a humpback whale, one of the largest whale species in the world, able to reach 17 m in lenght. We had a fun while with these whale, and as the turn closed to its end, we turned back and headed towards Reykjavík. But of course, not before visiting the thousands of puffins and other marine birds living in Akurey Island!

16:00 - This afternoon, still enjoying the sun, we set sail and were eager to go on our adventure. We stopped at Akurey, surrounded by puffins and a bit of splash! They were flying around us, always spreading their orange little feet as they go. As they went so did we, heading out into the bay. There was a little section with some splash but nothing we couldn't handle. We stopped as we found an area with a lot of birds, however no cetaceans. We continued and then suddenly spotted some jumping white beaked dolphins! It was tricky to say if it was one big pod of dolphins but around us were about 12-17. We also saw another pod splashing in the distance which was even harder to count but likely 5-7. We could see them in every direction, jumping around us, swimming under us and also following us! In this feeding frenzy chaos - we then spotted a blow! A humpback whale surfaced! This was a very friendly humpback as it always came up and always showed its fluke! There was one moment were the dolphins were clearly teasing the humpback! We stayed as long as we could but eventually had to head back, on the way back we still saw dolphins!

20:00 - We sailed out of Reykjavik harbor with rough seas and clear sky. We started our adventures journey towards the same area were we saw the whale on the previous tour hoping for the best. Few miles after this location we were lucky enough to spot at least  2 humpback whales. There were moving a lot and we took some time to be able to see them well, but in the end we saw a few fluke dives and even a peduncle throw ! We happily cruised with them until we set course to Akurey island to have a quick look of the cute puffins and we head back to Reykjavik harbor.
