Whale Diary

10:00 - The sea was a little bouncy and the wind was cold, but the sun was shining so it was fine. The minute we went past Akurey we saw a Harbor Porpoise swimming by very quickly, so we kept going. After a while of looking for wildlife we spotted a very shy Minke Whale, which only surfaced 2 times. But then we spotted blows in the distance and went there to check it out. It were 2 Humpback Whales, Davy Jones II and his friend Pep. They were quite awake and were surfacing often and then came very close to our boat and checked us out. They were "standing still" for a minute underneath our boat and then made there way down to the bottom of the bay, just to come up not far from us again. Unfortunately we had to go back, but on the way back we saw 3 other Minke Whales !

13:00 - The conditions were perfect, glassy water, sunshine and a cold but refreshing breeze. We went to the spot where we left the 2 Humpbacks at the last tour. Luckily they were still there, but this time a little more relaxed and took long dives. So we saw 2 other blows not far from us and decided to go there and check them out. It was Davy Jones with a friend. And he never disappoints! He and his friend were swimming right towards our boat and then diving underneath it! Looking up to us from underwater. Then spyhopping on the other side of the boat and slowly swimming away. On our way back we found 2 more Humpbacks! They were Neila and a friend. They also gave us a really nice goodbye display of their flukes !

15:00 - This afternoon was similar to the rest of the day - calm seas and bright blue skies. We headed out into the bay back to the areas where we had been successful earlier. We first saw some blows in the distance but it took us a little time to spot them a second time. When we did we found 2 humpback whales travelling together! They were very calm and just moving slowly at the surface. We were able to spend a lot of time with them and watch their beautiful fluke dives. While we were waiting for the humpbacks to surface between dives, we also spotted 3-4 minke whales scattered around us in a large area. We decided to search a few new areas but didn't find anything else so had to start heading back in to the harbour. A great end to the day.
