10:00 - We headed out in beaming sunshine and flat seas, pristine cetacean sighting conditions! We briefly stopped near Akurey to admire the Atlantic puffin colony before heading out into the bay. It didn't take long to spot the first blows, 2 humpback whales going for some wonderful fluke dives, disappearing under the waves and popping up in rather unexpected places. As these whales were busy feeding beneath the surface, we headed towards some other blows in the distance. These whales were quite a challenge to keep track of, diving deep as we approached and changing direction underwater, we were always caught by surprise when they surfaced. Luckily, we had a couple flocks of birds diligently pointing them out for us, each time the whales came to the surface. As we spent some more time in the area, it became clear there was a trio of humpbacks there, all feeding, changing direction underwater, but staying in the same general area. We also saw 4 minke whales joining in on the action, it was clear there was quite a feast taking place under us. We turned out attention to the largest of the humpbacks, which even demonstrated bubble-net feeding for us, and made a habit of surfacing mere meters from out boat, giving us an amazing close-up view! It even raised a pectoral fin above the water, giving us a little wave. Such a great encounter! Satisfied with these sightings, we began heading back, seeing (and occasionally even smelling) some sneaky minkes in the distance, and even some blows of humpbacks. What a successful, lucky tour!
