Whale Diary

11:00 - We sailed out with a fairly calm sea, cloudy skies and a southern wind blowing our way. We spotted a lot of bird activity in the bay today, including plunge diving gannets and puffins flying by! This was a good sign of food available for the whales so it got us very excited about what could be in store for us. Even though we did search for a long time we couldn't seem to find any signs of cetaceans. Near the end of the tour, we did manage to find ourselves a bod of 4 or 5 very active harbour porpoises! We stuck around with them for a bit and got some nice close looks of these cute little cetaceans. Eventually it was time for us to head back though, and since we want all our passengers to have the full whale watching experience, we did hand them complimentary tickets so they can come back again on one of our tours and see more of the bay's amazing wildlife.

14:00 - This afternoon, we decided to head further south first to search new areas. We saw lots of birds feeding and our onboard fish finder showed a lot of fish in the area. We could a couple glimpses of around 2 harbour porpoises and our captain saw a minke only once but we didn't see it again. We decided to move on and after searching towards Hvalfjörður, we saw another minke whale! This time everyone on the boat managed to see it a couple of times right in front of us but then, sadly, it disappeared again. That was when Eldey, one of our sister company's boats, told us they had found some dolphins! When we approached they were hapy to swim around our boat and come close a few times! There were around 7 white-beaked dolphins in the pod and although they kept us on our toes by changing directions a lot, it was an amazing encounter!
