Whale Diary

10:00 - The bay was sun soaked and even though a bit choppy, full of life this morning. In total we saw 5 humpback whales, spread out over the bay. Most of them were going on longer dives and so proving the point whale watching can be a bit of a waiting game. luckily, we had a bunch of harbour porpoises around, passing us by, keeping us entertained while we waited for the humpbacks to resurface. We also saw 3  minke whales, the encounters being short and sweet, just like this diary!

12:00 - The sun was shining as we traded land for the ocean and made our way out into the bay. First, we found one lone humpback whale surfacing calmly and taking deep dives, even showing us its all-white fluke a couple of times. At one point, a minke whale even surfaced close to us! After we had spent quite some time with the humpback whale, we moved on in search of another. As we were sailing, we encountered a very tiny surprise on the water.. a baby puffin! Then it wasn't long until we spotted another blow in the distance, and ventured over there to find another humpback whale! This one was a little shyer than the previous whale, but we still enjoyed its company before it gave us one fluke dive and disappeared into the deep! On this trip we encountered many different bird species, such as Northern gannets, razorbills, guillemots, and shearwaters! On our way back to the harbour, we were treated to a lovely rainbow gleaming in all its colours! A fantastic finale to a great tour!

14:00 - With the sun still shining and the sea conditions getting calmer we sailed out once more. After some searching, we found a humpback whale. This individual was diving fairly long, but it was worth the wait as we got rewarded with multiple surfaces and a nice and fluke dive before it went down each time. A second humpback was diving much shorter and so we got to see it come up quite a few times, and as it didn't travel all that fast, we got to stay nice and close! After saying this whale goodbye as well, we ventured on and found an area with 5 minke whales! Some closer, some further away and one coming up just a few meters behind us! Eventually, we ran out of time and had to turn back towards Reykjavik, more than satisfied with this afternoon´s sightings.

15:00 - We departed into the bay with sunny and calm weather, passing by the Tara research vessel, an amazing polar research station, which has been docked in Reykjavík, these past few days. Out on the bay, the sea was flat, almost like a lake, and it didn´t take long for us to see our a whale. This was an humpback whale, which was coming up for air, before diving again, showing us its beautiful tail. After seeing it a few times, this large animal surfaced really close to our boat, we could perfectly hear its loud blow. It then dove, showing us its tail for the last time in the tour, before we left it and continued with our journey. We headed further North to search for more wildlife, while having nice view of the city of Akranes and the nearby landscape. We then returned to Reyjavík and did a quick drive-pass by the city´s coast, before getting back into the harbour.
