Whale Diary

10:00 - Today we were blessed with sun shining through the clouds on us. We did not have to drive far until we had our first sighting. A big cloud of misty air rose several meters into the air. This was coming from a humpback whale. It was curious and came to check us out closely. One time it even caught us off guard by coming up right next to us and made a huge trumpet sound that startled us a bit. It offered some gorgeous fluke dives too. Throughout the tour we had 3 more humpback whales within the same area so it was like a whale soup out there today! They seemed curious to check us out so the guests got some really cool encounters today. What a wonderful day out at sea today!

12:00 - Today we sailed out straight to Akurey, to check out the puffins on the island. There were plenty of them and we had fun seeing them flying above us! Then, we headed to the middle of the bay, in which was a bit choppy, but we arrived to an area full of birds all around. Some of the flocks were just resting, some of them feeding and even plunge diving! So we knew we had a bunch of food there. It didn't take long until we saw a big blow, and after a couple of minutes, we saw we had 2 different individuals of Humpback whale. We decided to check the one closer to us, which had a complete white fluke and was spending around 6 minutes under the surface. This one was a bit tricky but we got to see it a couple of times. The last sighting was beautiful and closer, as we could even see a bit of the white pectoral fins through the surface. We then started heading back home, with a bit of rain, but satisfied with this big humpy!

14:00 - Our tour started with a visit to Engey island, where our passengers could meet and learn to identify the multiple sea birds they would see throughout the tour, including the iconic (and very cute) puffins! After a few minutes, we left Engey and headed further into the ocean, to search for whales. The sea was a bit choppy and windy, but nothing too bad. Our first sighting was of a lone humpback whale, who kept surfacing in multiple locations, for short periods, before diving into the deep. The whale was likely feeding, and we left it be to search for more wildlife. Less than 10 minutes afterwards, we spotted a second humbpack, who was accompanied by a group of around 10 white-beaked dolphins. This was quite a sighting, as the dolphins were breaching ("jumping"), and the whale was lunge-feeding, bringing it´s mouth full of fish up to the water's surface. After this amazing experience, we headed back home, verry happy with the moments we had!

16:00 - Once again, we sailed out eager to find some whales! We went straight into the bay, and after a while searching, we passed by an area full of birds. There was a blow going all over the place there. This belonged to a humpback whale, which was indeed all over the place! The same individual was feeding actively, sometimes showing off its mouthful of food when it would come to the surface! After a couple more of lunge feeds and many good looks of this one, we decided to check another area. On the way back, we passed by the island of Akurey to spot some puffins. There were so many on the water and flying around and we got amazed by the about of it. We then returned to the harbour as the sun came behind the clouds to finish a great tour.

20:00 - On our last tour of the day, the sun decided to shine and we were excited to find some whales! We then went right into the middle of the bay, where we started to spot a few blows in the distance! The sunlight was exposing all of them. We approached the closest one, to find out a humpback whale, feeding like crazy! This one was indeed, Mr. Bubbles, a known humpback in the bay! It was all over the place and we just stood there, while it was going around us. After some quality time with it, we went to the direction of another blow, and this other humpback was being followed by the birds while feeding, so it was easy to keep on track on it! On the way home, we still stopped for 2 more humpbacks, that were passing by! Close to Reykjavik, we stopped by Akurey island to see the puffins on the sunset, and boy they were still so many on the water! Later, we were ready to go home, very happy with such a good day!
