Whale Diary

10:00 - What a great tour we had this morning! We started with a quick visit to Lundey island, where the puffins were very active, flying all over the place in big swirls, some of them bringing fish back to feed their newborn chicks. Everybody was delighted and aferwards we moved on, keeping close to the northern shore to stay protected from the coming winds. Near Akranes we turned a bit towards the centre of the bay, and after not long, we found a group of white beaked dolphins, around 10 of them, which were happy to bow ride and swim repeteadly under the boat. After a bit of a wait we spotted a Humpback Whale, which spent quite some time on the surface, and gave people good photos. After some time with it we started our way home and on the way we found 2 minke whales which gave a nice finish to the tour.

14:00 - This afternoon, after a brief stop at Lundey to see the adorable puffins, we headed back to the same area where the morning tours had seen all the wildlife. When we were approaching the area, we could already see the blows of a Humpback Whale and when we arrived we realised that it was lunge feeding at the surface. It was amazing to watch! The whole head of the whale was launching out of the water, with its mouth full of fish! We watched this individual for a while but after some more boats arrived it seemed like the whale was not happy being so surrounded and started to swim long distances when it was diving. We didn't want to disturb the whale so we decided to move on and try to find other cetaceans in other areas. Not too long after leaving, we spotted another blow in the distance but this time it was a Minke Whale. While we were waiting for the minke to reappear, a small pod of 5 white-beaked dolphins appeared as well and briefly swam around our boat. Then over the radio we were told that another boat had spotted 3 more humpback whales so we went to see them before we ran out of time. The three humpbacks were a lot more relaxed than our first and it was a perfect way to finish off the tour.

16:00 - The afternoon was sunny and with beautiful clear skies and we started our journey hoppefull to find some whales! We knew were the previous tours had been so that was our starting point. We scan the sea paciently despite the small white caps and the wind our costumers prove to be great sailors and continued paciently with happy smiles throughout the trip. After searching for over an hour we had our first clue! A boat spotted a blow in the distance! We sailed to the area and just after a few minutes we saw our fisrt blow! Then as we got closer we could se clearly... A Humpback Whale! We arrived just in time to see a beautifull fluke dive! Then to our surprise, the whale got closer and resurfaced right next to our boat! We still had time so see it a couple more times before we decided it was time to return to the harbour! So we started our way back but we were able to stop for a few minutes in Engey to see some puffins up close before our journey was over!

20:00 - What a glorious evening tour we had! We started with a visit to the puffins in Engey, which were very active, the adults bringing food to feed their young. Afterwards we set sail into the bay, keeping close to the north coast, as the wind was coming from that direction. We kept seeing fins and blows but it was difficult to spot the animals, but patience was rewarded when we could finally spot 2 humpback whales really close to whalefjord! They gave quite a show, rolling and slapping, and it looked really nice in the evening light. After some time we started driving back we spotted a third Humpback Whale very near the harbour. It was an excellent finale.
