Whale Diary

11:00 - There was a light rain over Faxaflói, but the easterly wind was not too cold today so we were excited to motor into the bay. Lots of northern gannets and great black-backed gulls were flying around, some of them diving into the water to catch fish. Underneath all the birds, we saw some tiny splashes that were produced by harbour porpoises. We stopped the boat, and before we knew it we were surrounded by them! The porpoises were coming very close, often surfacing together, and circling all around us. We had so much fun with the porpoises that time flew by, but since we really wanted to show our passengers some of the larger species too we decided to give out complimentary tickets, just so everyone ahs a chance to come whale-watching on our larger boats again sometime soon!

14:00 - We left harbor with a calm sea and high hopes to find some wildlife. It wasn't that cold and the rain had stopped. As we sailed along we saw a lot of different bird species like Northern Gannets and Northern Fulmars for example. Then we saw a small triangular dorsal fin in the water, so we stopped. It were 5-6 Harbor Porpoises. We stayed with them for a while, until they disappeared. Then we also kept going. On the radio we heard that there was a Minke Whale in the area. As we arrived there, we had very good vision of it. It was surfacing very often and also very close to our boat. Everyone could see this Minke's big dorsal fin. Successful we sailed back to the harbor with happy guests and happy crew. :)
