Whale Diary

09:00 - The day started with the sun shining between the the clouds. On our way out we had a full rainbow with view of the ocean. We set course towards it enjoying it while we were heading to the open waters. Soon our attention shifted to a dorsal fin. It was a minke whale that surfaced close to our bout few times. Not long after a blow appeared in the horizon and we went to investigate. It was a big humpback whale  that was feeding in this area. It came close to our boat many times treating us with many fluke dives. It had really interesting scars on its fluke that made us imagining the stories and the fights it has bas with orcas. After this beautiful encounter we continued further our until we came across a pot of five white beaked dolphins. They were really curious of our existence and especially of the waves that our boat was making. We were so happy to see them jumping around our bout and surfing our waves. This sighting made our day even more memorable and we came back to port with big smiles and many stories to tell.

12:00 - The wind calmed down even more as we went out for our second tour. Not far past the islands we spotted a pair of shy harbour porpoises. These little whales disappeared quickly after we stopped and so we went on further out. Not much later a fast minke whale surfaced close to us and we had a good look at it before also this shy and fast animal disappeared. A great start to the tour and it got even better as a pod of around 10 white-beaked dolphins came close to our boat and swam alongside us for several minutes until we left them and turned our attention towards some big blows that we spotted on the horizon. There we found a huge humpback whale that was apparently feeding deep below. We stayed in the area for a while and observed some great fluke dives as the animal lifted its massive tail fin out of the water for deeper dives. With all four of our main species seen, this tour was a full success.

15:00 - The skies were cloudy on top of Reykjavik and as we sailed out they cleared up. The winds had died out and the seas were completely flat and we were gliding fast and smooth on the ocean. Our first sighting was right at the begging of our tour next to Akurey island a minke whale that raised the  expectations of the tour as it was coming up multiple times close to our boat. Few handread meters away we spotted a pod of five harbour porpoises that surfaced few time and then they disappeared deep in. We didn't wait for long and we continued further out in Faxafloi bay. As we were looking at the horizon some blows took our attention. It was not one but two humpback whales that were cruising together. We were amazed by there size and we stayed with them for a while. They treaded us with many fluke dives as we were stopped with our engines off and admiring this gentle giants. Some splashes made us leave these amazing individual and we continued further out to investigate. White beaked dolphins! All around our boat a pod of six of them with some calves too. They filled us with there playful energy while they were bow riding and surfing our waves. We count ask for more and we started our way back after seeing again all the common species that visit Faxafloi bay.
