Whale Diary

10:00 - The morning was looking great for a really good trip of whale watching. We started with a quick visit to Engey island to see our puffin friends, that were very curious, coming really close to have a look at us. It was fun! Puffins are always so populart. Next, we drove on, going northwards, towards Akranes. After around 20 minutes it was bingo! And we spotted 2 humpback whales. They gave us a big repertoire of behaviours: rolling, tail slapping, and making loud noises when coming to breathe and blow. We stayed with them for some time, and when it came the time to leave, they both dived down, showing their flukes in the process. Everybody was delighted, and as we were approaching harbour again, we saw 2 minke whales swimming not too far from the boat. It was a good end for a good trip.

12:00 - The sun was shining for our midday tour and we had good sea conditions as we headed out into the bay. On our way to the area where the previouds tour had seen some wildlife, we spotted a Minke Whale. We were only able to see the minke a couple of times before it disappeared below the waves. We decided to keep going and looked for more cetaceans. After a while we spotted a lot of blows in the distance and went to that area but when we got there we couldn't find the whales that had made them. We think they were the humpbacks that had been seen on the previous tour but were either travelling fast or taking long dives because they were very shy of us. While we were waiting we saw another 1/2 minke whales. But again they were quick at the surface and only came up a couple of times. As our sightings weren't the best, we offeres all our passengers complimentary tickets to return on one of our Classic tours and try their luck again.

14:00 - This afternoon we headed out with some wind but nothing that can stop us, especially after the success of this morning! After a quick stop at the puffin island we aimed for the area where we been lucky in the morning but it seemed like the whales moved away. With some more searching we spotted the blows of the 2 humpback whales not too long after. Both of the animals were quite active and coming to the surface often. We even saw one of them tail slapping a few times, which let us see the animal in full glory. As we waited for the humpback whales, two minke whales also appeared closeby in the same area. With that we conclueded a successful tour and headed back to Reykjavik.

16:00 - This evening we headed out into the bay straight to the spot where the whales been on previous tours. After a bit of searching and manouvering throught the waves we spotted the blows of two humpback whales. We slowly approached the animals to have a better look and saw them surfacing a few times. Although animals were shy at first, we could still see them quite well but the best was yet to come. Just as we were trying to head back home one of the whales came right to our boat and surfaced a few times just meters away from us! After such a phenomenal sighting we were happy to head back home.
