Species seen today: Humpback Whale

Birds seen today: Atlantic Puffin(!), Northern Fulmar, Black Guillemot, Black headed Gull, Great Black backed Gull, Herring Gull, Eider Ducks, Cormorant

10:00 - This morning the weather was pleasant for whale-watching, with the wind behind us and some sun upon our heads we tried our best to find signs of the animals. Our first stop was to observe two Atlantic puffins that flew away. Those are the first ones of several millions that come in Iceland every year. There was some high waves but the long swell made it nice for our passengers. We reached an area where other boats where waiting a humpback whale to resurface. Once the boats left we appraoched a bit more the area to see the blow and the back of a nice resting humpback whale. The majestic animal was calm and going for short 4 minutes dives, breathing a few times before going back under the surface after curving its back. We left the area to find another humpback whale that was not very far away. This one was more active, moving quicker and lifting the tail out of the water. Once out of time we came back to the harbour goign through some rain.

14:00 - The sun was out during the whole tour and we got lucky to see a humpback whale only a few minutes after leaving the harbour, close to the Grótta lighthouse. In the distance we saw the white pectoral fin of the animal waving at us. We got closer and could observe a few times how this whale was surfacing and diving. We recognize Davy Jones, an active individual seen in the last few years. After a last good fluke dive we left Davy Jones some space and left the area trying to find something else. We stopped a couple of times when we saw Atlantic puffins in the water. We could not find anything so towards the end we went back to see Davy Jones a couple of times before going back to the harbour.
