Whale Diary

10:00 - We had a good sailing out, going in the same direction than the wind and the waves were quite small. A pair of humpback whales were very active not very far, already observed by a few other boats. We kept some distance to not disturb them and observed the breaches, peduncle throws and tail slaps of those 2 active whales.  In the same area we spotted at least 3 minke whales that popped up showing there very slim body at the surface of the sea. We did not stay long in the area since there was too many boats and went a bit further out. We spotted at least 4 more minke, one with a very strange triangular dorsal fin came very close to us. The we saw a white-beaked dolphin that came close to our boat and brought us to a group of 4-5 more of those cetaceans. They were surrounding another humpback whale that was clearly reacting to them moving its tail and pectoral fins around and trumpeting, doing noisy sounds while blowing air from its nostrils. We stayed for a bit then left to go back to the harbour, stopping briefly in the way back to have a look to the 2 first humpbacks, one of them did a breach. It was late so we finished the tour getting back to our dock.

14:00 - The sea started to improve and calming down, but we had rain almost constantly falling on us during the tour. We explored the bay a little bit further than this morning and found a total of 7-10 minke whales, some of them lunge-feeding, provoking some splashing and showing their pink belly, full of water and fish. We also spotted a humpback whale that was lunge feeding with birds on top of them trying to steal a fish or two. It was a great show and amazing to see the inside of the mouth of this whale with the baleen plates and the pink tongue. After a while we moved to another area and found another humpback a bit more calm that showed us its tail in a beautiful fluke dive before we had to go back home.

16:00 - The sea was very calm but we had a lot of rain on the way out until the rain slowly calmed down. On our way out we had the shortest encounter with 3-4 shy harbour porpoises. We went straight were we thought the humpback whales from earlier were and soon enough we spotted one of the blows. We slowed down way before since we spotted a minke whale in the area as well. We kept going anticipating that like earlier we would see more of them during the tour and we were right since we saw probably 7-10 in total during the tour. We reached the area with larger blows and there were 3 humpback whales swimming calmly next to each other. We had a great time with approaching them very slowly from quite close. They were just gently swimming, a couple of times logging, and sometimes going on fluke dives revealing their beautiful tail. After a while we decided to give them space and went for another area with minkes and another humpback whale. We saw this whale fluke dive one last time and went back to the harbour wet and cold but full of joy.
