Whale Diary

10:00 - This sunny Monday we sailed out, layers on, sun-cream on! As we sailed we stopped at Akurey first and were spoilt for choice by puffins! They were on all our sides, at sea and at land. After that we went further out, we still enjoyed the puffins on the sail out along with a lot of other bird species, like Northern fulmars, and Northern gannets. We watched for flocks of birds to see of there was something bigger with them and spotted a minke whale! This individual was a little elusive and we moved on. We did then find some very curious white beaked dolphins! It was a pod of three, and they came extremely close and investigated the boat! We also spotted a pod of jumping white beaked dolphins! It was likely a second pod, as they were a little further away but it could also have been a widespread one. We then had to start our return journey home.

14:00 - The sun still shining bright this afternoon and the temperature had increased ever so slightly. Right out the harbour we spotted already spotted a minke whale! This animal was travelling erratically around  the area and so we had an exciting time trying to keep up with it. It took us all around between the islands, sometimes popping up a bit further away, but every now and then surprisingly close. Eventually it started to head out deeper into the bay and so we said our goodbye as we continued our search, scanning all  corners for more marine life. Unfortunately we caught no more signs of cetaceans, but we did of course stop by Akurey, which was teeming with puffins! With this perfect end of our afternoon we went back to shore, concluding our day of whalewatching!
