Whale Diary

10:00 - This morning was still a little choppy from the rough conditions yesterday but were much improved. After stopping at Akurey to see some puffins, we headed out into the bay in search of whales and dolphins. One of our boats spotted a small pod of 3 harbour porpoises. They stayed close to the boat for a little while but once they swam away we moved on and soon found a pod of 7-10 white-beaked dolphins. Both boats were able to watch these dolphins for some time while they jumped, surfed and zoomed through the waves! We were joined by many other boats so we didn't want to overcrowd the dolphins and decided to move on. One boat then saw a Minke Whale and the other boat came to join but this individual was a bit shy and we didn't manage to see it again. A great start to the day!

12:00 - The sun was peaking through the clouds today as we set sail into the bay. The sea today was fairly rough, which made the tour all the more exciting and adventurous! We checked out multiple spots we knew held great potential for sightings, but sadly we weren't very lucky this trip. At the end of the trip we did stop by the beautiful island of Akurey to have a nice good look at the puffin colony there. After, we headed back into port and handed out complementary tickets to the passengers, so they can have another chance at spotting all the beautiful animals here in the bay.

14:00 - Today's weather was overcast with some wind and a bit of swell, but we were eager to set out on our whale watching adventure. We headed out of the harbor and made a stop by Akurey to see some puffins. These delightful birds were a wonderful start to our trip. As we sailed further out, we spotted a Humpback Whale in the distance. Unfortunately, it was quite shy and despite our efforts, we couldn't get a closer look. After trying for some time, we decided to continue our search. A few minutes later, we spotted a Minke Whale. However, this whale was also very shy and we lost sight of it after just one brief appearance. Despite our best efforts, the sightings today were limited. To ensure our guests have another chance to experience the thrill of whale watching, we provided complimentary tickets for a future trip. Although today's sightings were few, we hope for better luck and more active whales on our next trip.

16:00 - We headed out with a little bit of a rough sea but the sun was shining warm on our faces. We didn't have to go far out, when we saw 1 Humpback Whale it was surfacing to take a breath and then dove down by showing us it's fluke. We waited for it to surface again but he was a little sneeky. He came up right behind us for a short breath and disappeared again, this time for good. After realizing we wouldn't see it again we went further out. We saw some birds and decided to give it a try, but we weren't lucky with whales this time. But we saw Arctic Twrns, Arctic Skuas, Northern Fulmars and Great Black Backed Gulls. After a while of waiting and enjoying the sun and the birds we had to head back, because we also wanted to see the Puffins, which we did. The ride was a little rough again, but the guest liked it.
