Whale Diary

10:00 -  We sailed out into long, slow waves and the sun shining on our faces. The bay was full of life today, with many species around. During the tour, we saw at least 8 minke whales quickly surfacing and diving all around. We also saw 3 humpback whales. This encounter started with each whale by themselves, but then very quickly they converged towards each other and the three of them continued assisting each other in feeding, diving many times for just a few minutes. We spent a long time next to these whales while they were on their feeding frenzy, until a massive blow caught our eye. This blow then turned out to belong to an enormous fin whale! This whale was feeding as well and clearly caught up in his lunch it came less than 20 meters by us, leaving us in awe by its incredible size! eventually we did have to go back to the harbour, leaving all this spectacle behind us.

12:00 -  The weather during this tour was perfect for whale watching. The sun was shinning, there was no wind and the ocean had very long swells, so it was quite fun to sail out onto the bay. It didn't take us very long to find our first whale, which was a fin whale! This is not a species that we see very often so we were all shocked by the big size of this animal. It was also quite friendly and came close to the boat a few times. Then, we decided to leave this whale alone and look for something else. We found a group of 4 humpback whales. They were very nice with us and we were able to stay with them for quite a long time so we could take a good look at them. They even showed the fluke every time they went for a deeper dive. Finally, on our way back to port we spotted a minke whale. Even though they tend to be a bit elusive, we could see it a couple of times before going back home.

14:00 -  This afternoon we sailed out into glorious sunshine. There was a bit of swell but it was fun to sail out and see what nature had in store for us! And boy it had a lot in store for us! After spotting a minke whale we heard rumours of something bigger - we ended up finding a fin whale! These are huge animals, growing up to 26m! This one was travelling quite fast but always showed us its huuuge back. As it had some speed on it and we did not want to chase it, we headed on. We then found 2 humpback whales! We stayed a bit and they would show their gorgeous flukes and dorsal fins! What a glorious day out. On the way back one of the humpbacks then tail-slapped multiple times! We then had a mini puffin stop and headed home.

16:00 -  The conditions for whale watching today were amazing. We could all enjoy the sun on our way out and feel the breeze in our face. After sailing a little bit, we found a fin whale. This whale was huge, and since it is not a species that we see very often, we enjoyed every minute we spent with this whale. It was a very nice whale that came a few times quite close to the boat. Then, we decided to move and look for something else. We found a single humpback whale. This whale was very focused on feeding, but every time it went down it showed us its beautiful fluke. We spotted a few blows in the distance, which ended up being a group of 3 humpback whales. They were very nice with us but unfortunately we were running out of time. However, before going back to the harbor we needed to say good bye to the fin whale so we spent a few minutes with it before going back home.

20:00 -  We started the tour sailing straight to the open oean to try and catch some of the action that was happening during the day with the whales.

after a while where we couldn't spot anything we decided to change course. Then we ended up finding two Humpback whales that disappeared fast. We looked further and saw couple of hundred meters from us a Humpback breaching! We rushed towards it's position and realised it was two Humpback whales and one of them was breaching a lot (4 times) a grand finale for this tour before coming back to shore.
