Whale Diary

09:00 - We went out with a stiff breeze blowing from the south-east and thick snow clouds covering the sky. We searched around the islands and along the coast out to the whale fjord. as we plowed through the rough wind, waves and snow on our way back to Reykjavik we spotted a pod of around 5 harbour porpoise and could get a shots view on these shy little guys before they disappeared amongst the waves. Since we could not find any whales during this tour, we offerd complementary tickets to our guest so they can come out on a whale watching tour another time.

12:00 - The wind was still blowing strong from the south-east as we went out, but at least there were some gabs in between so we were able to see the sun from time to time. We found a small pod of around 6 harbour porpoise  near the whale fjord and on our way back we spotted a blow of something much bigger! A minke whale was actively feeding near the island of Engey.  We got close enough for some nice pictures and to get a good impression of its size as it came to the surface mere meters from our boat. A great tour under challenging conditions.

15:00 - The wind was still blowing strong from the south-east but the sun finally won over the clouds and so we went out in bright sunshine. We searched around the islands and after a while we spotted a minke whale close to the island of Engey. It was feeding and thus traveling in large circles leading us around. We could stay with the animal for quite some time and got great pictures of it as it came to the surface, showing its elegant figure.
