Whale Diary

11:00 - This morning the sun was shining as we headed out, we also had the wind behind us. Not too long into our trip we saw some birds feeding but before we had time to check them out a blow appeared on our left. It was a humpback whale! To start with this individual was a bit tricker, only surfacing one or twice before travelling a long way. But eventually they settles down a bit. They would now surface 5-6 times giving us a really good look. We even saw a couple of fluke dives! Whilst it had gone down once we saw a minke whale come up as well. Some harbour porpoises also started to act a lot like dolphins as well, there were about 10-15 of them close to the humpback. They would surface really near us on all sides giving everyone an amazing look at this tiny cetacean. We then headed back home after this incredible morning.

14:00 - After this morning's great sightings, we went out this afternoon to the same areas, trying to find the same whale. Unfortunately, the humpback had moved on and although we split up to search a wider area, we couldn't find it. During our search we did see a couple of pods of harbour porpoises, around 4 in total, and a solo white-beaked dolphin. The wind started to pick up this afternoon as well, which made for an exhilarating ride for our passengers. Due to our disappointing sightings this afternoon, we gave all our passengers complimentary tickets to come back on a Classic tour for free either in Reykjavik or Akureyri.
