10:00 - What a spectacular start to the season today! With mirror-flat seas, we could see miles into the bay and everywhere we looked we could see white-beaked dolphins. When we approached a pod of 6-7 dolphins, we were very pleasantly surprised by the blow and back of a humpback whale! The humpback whale was calmly surfacing while the white-beaked dolphins became more playful and tried to get the attention of the humpback whale and even of us by coming close to our RIBs. After some time the dolphins left, and we focused on the humpback whale who was calmly swimming further. Then out of the blue, the humpback whale breached with its full body out of the water, only meters away from one of the RIBs! Thinking the sighting could hardly get better than this, we said goodbye to the humpback whale and continued our way further out in Faxaflói. We found pods of dolphins everywhere in the bay - probably around 50 individuals in total. When our time was up we headed back to Reykjavík and spotted 4 harbour porpoises on the way. An incredible first day.

14:00 - The conditions in the bay continued to amaze us as we sailed through mirror-flat seas this afternoon. Initially, occasional raindrops fell onto our overalls, but if anything we enjoyed them as they resulted in a vividly coloured rainbow. We were quick to spot a lone humpback whale, who seemed interested in some company as it circeled our RIB. The individual was very active, and threw its tailfin in the air to show us the beautiful pattern underneath. The humpback whale was swimming fast and after some time we wanted to let him or her do their own thing again, so we continued towards Akranes. On the way, we saw something moving at the surface - another humpback whale! We didn´t know it at first, but this humpback whale was not alone: another smaller individual was swimming next to it! We admired these two for some time and they treated us to the beautiful sight of their pectoral fins waving in the air. With this sighting in our minds we headed straight back to Reykjavík with some rain on the way back to remind us that we are still in Iceland.
