Whale Diary

09:00 - We headed out into cloudy skies and calm seas, not quite knowing what the day would bring. After some searching, we were delighted to find a pod of around 15 white-beaked dolphins. They were incredibly playful, coming very close to the boat and jumping repeatedly around us. They put on a fantastic show, and we had a wonderful time watching their energy and curiosity. We then moved on after hearing that there were humpback whales in another area. When we arrived, we soon spotted our first humpback whale. We watched it feeding several times before it moved on, and not long afterwards we found a second humpback nearby. This whale gave us some lovely views as it surfaced and then performed several beautiful fluke dives, disappearing beneath the water before resurfacing again. After a fantastic day with both playful dolphins and humpback whales, we headed back towards the harbour, very happy with the sightings we had enjoyed.

12:00 - While the sea would get a bit choppier later in the tour it was incredibly flat at the beginning while the clouds still gloomed overhead. We searched around for a bit and first ly ended up in an area where 2 minke whales were around. We stuck around for a bit until a big blow caught our eye. A humpback whale was nearby! This animal was moving fast, chasing schools of fish as it was enjoying its lunch. After some time we continued to search and now found a pair of humpbacks! These 2 whales were very sleepy and so we stuck by their side as they were slumbering. To end we also found a pod of 10 White-beaked dolphins! The pod was sticking close together and moving around calmly, so we could enjoy their many dorsal fins and faces poke out the water until time ran out and it was time for us to go back to port.

15:00 - We headed out into calm seas beneath cloudy skies, hopeful that the whales would make an appearance. The search went on for a long time, followed by an even longer wait—but eventually, our patience was rewarded. We spotted a pair of humpback whales travelling together. They weren’t moving particularly fast, but they were making impressively long dives, disappearing beneath the surface for what felt like ages before finally resurfacing. We stayed with them, and our patience truly paid off. We were lucky enough to see them several times, and on a few occasions, they surfaced remarkably close to the boat. On our way back to the harbour, we had one final surprise. We came across two more solitary humpback whales, each travelling on its own. Both gave us a wonderful farewell, showing their flukes once before disappearing beneath the water. A slow start, plenty of waiting, and a whole lot of patience—but what a rewarding day on the ocean.
