Whale Diary

10:00 - Today we had a beautiful day ahead of us. Although the waves were a bit high, we still had very good sea conditions and the sun shining during the whole tour! We first went to Akurey, one of the islands we go to spot some Atlantic puffins. The island was full of them and we had fun while they flew above us and sat on the water too. We then went towards the middle of the bay, where we spotted a big blow in the distance. It was a humpback whale, going for deep dives and feeding at the bottom. We could see it a couple of times and spotted a minke whale in the distance. We then went to another area, where we saw about 20 white-beaked dolphins scattered, sometimes feeding and one jumping!. They started bow riding and there were a few juveniles in the pod! We also spotted another humpback in the distance and, getting there, there were even more dolphins, about 30 this time! As we were running out of time, we decided to go home, first passing by the Sun Voyager for a quick look. A wonderful and fun morning!

14:00 - We headed out into a glistening bay under beaming sunshine, full-on summer weather. We had a brief stop at Akurey, the island hosting the largest Atlantic puffin colony out of the three near the harbour. We spent some time admiring these resilient little birds as they were flying by and above us, bobbing on the surface of the water, and at the very top of the island, tidying their burrows. We then headed out into the bay, hopeful and ready to brave the large but slow, calm waves. We spotted some rather excited birds near the surface and underneath them a rather sneaky minke whale, apparently quite busy feeding. Since this whale was feeling a bit secretive, we decided to continue on and came upon an area with a humpback whale. This individual definitely tested our spotting ability as well as our patience, as it was going for longer fluke-dives and popping up in unexpected directions. So, we decided to respect this whales privacy, and headed out to find more sociable cetaceans, and spotted a pod of 3 white-beaked dolphins! It's always such a treat to see them. As we were running out of time, we headed back towards Reykjavik, but spotted yet another humpback on our way! This whale seemed to be a bit less shy, so we spent a lovely couple of minutes with it, before heading back. What a beautiful day!
