Whale Diary

14:00 - Today, the sea conditions were fairly rough but the wind let up enough in the early afternoon for us to go out whale watching. We were cautious and always put our passengers safety and comfort first but we were also hopeful to be able to find some wildlife. We headed out into the bay, staying close to the coast at first to avoid the worst of the wind and swell, and then turned towards the area where we mostly find the animals. As we were sailing, we suddenly saw the blow of a Minke Whale! This individual came up multiple times quite close to us but was travelling fairly quickly through the waves. It looked like it was headed to a large group of birds so was probably on the search for some fish. After spotting it a few times, we then saw a whale breach in the distance a few miles away so we decided to brave a few more bumps on the waves to check it out. When we arrived we found a Humpback Whale that was staying near the surface even when it did longer dives. We were able to see it a few times but then unfortunately started to run out of time and as we had a bumpy ride ahead of us and our stop at one of the puffin islands, we had to start heading back into the harbour.
