Whale Diary

10:00 - It was with a radiant sun and a cold wind that we ventured into the bay this morning. It took us a good 40 min ride before we got to a place with a rich wildlife. We saw first a pod of 3 white beaked dolphins, as the animals were avoidant of the boat we left them and went toward another pod of 10 white beaked dolphins. We observed these animals for a while before we moved on to another animal we had around .... it was a humpback whale. The humpback was very quiet, travelling slowly, and we got the incredible luck of seeing it barely a few meters away from our embarcations. It was incredible to watch it from such a close angle as it was lifting its fluke to go for deeper dives. A pod of 3 or so white beaked dolphins were in the exact same area, hence we got to see both at the same time, what a treat. After some time with the animals we moved on to try to find another whale in the area without success. Well, even if we have not seen this last one, it was an incredible tour and everyone came back extremely happy.

14:00 - We headed out with nice weather, the sun was shining, the sea was a little rough, but it was warm. We had to sail out quite far, but it was worth it, we found a Humpback Whale, which was surfacing very often and showing us it's beautiful fluke ! After a while we decided to leave it alone and look for something else. We could find 2 juvenile Northern Gannets, one of them was circling us and checking us out. As always all good things must come to an end, so we sailed back to Akurey and stopped to have a last look at the cute little Puffins. Then we headed for the harbor. :)
