Whale Diary

10:00 - Another beautiful morning in Reykjavik remind us, summer in Iceland is still possible. Even thought out at sea was a little bit chilly, our cozy overalls kept us warm. The sea conditions were a little bit bumpy, but still good enough for sailing. Before heading north we stopped in our usual puffin colony, Engey island, to observe our beloved puffins. They were flying around, but also a lot of them were resting at the surface. At this time they are arriving back to the colonies carrying a lot of fish on their orange beaks. We managed to sea skuas chasing the tiny puffins trying to steal their fishes. After this documentary moment we sailed to the north of Faxafloi bay. After travelling for a while we found a very nice pod of whited beaked dolphins, at least 5 dolphins appeared very closed to our boats. They were approaching and bow riding several times. Allowing us to see them in details. We even saw two small babies dolphins. And amazing moment! Later we continued sailing, this time to the east, but unfortunately we couldn't find any other cetaceans species. We passed pretty close to different areas with seabirds activity, hopping to find a common feeding area for cetaceans as well. But after all of our efforts we run out of time and we needed to come back to the harbor. Even we saw the dolphins perfectly the tour didn't reach our tour quality level so we decided to give to all of our passengers a complementary tickets to repeat another whale watching tour in the classic tours.

12:00 - Today we were spoilt with sunshine and blue skies! This does mean that there is usually wind from the North which means it can be cold at sea. We set sailed and went straight into the bay. We did have quite a long sail and then happened across some white beaked dolphins! This was 3 friendly individuals, it looked like 2 adult and one that was a bit smaller. They were clearly interested in the boat and the bubbles created by the engine. We then continued sailing and eventually headed home. We did stop at Engey to have a closer look at some puffins, even after seeing a lot at sea. We sailed past the sun-voyager and then ended in a little traffic jam to get back into the harbour. We did end up offering complimentary tickets so that everyone can come back and see the bay in its full glory.
