Whale Diary

09:00 - What a great day! 20 minutes into the search we found our first humpback whale. It looked like Davy Jones, though we weren't sure. It was very relaxed and friendly, but it took long dives, so after a while, we left it alone, and went slightly South West, were we found 3 more humpbacks! Total count 4 individuals. These four were swimming and interacting together, constantly in sync. It was an incredible tour.

10:00 - The sun was shining bright this morning as we headed out of the harbour. After just passing the second harbour wall, we spotted our first cetacean - a minke whale! We were very lucky as this individual was surfacing many times and sometimes close to our boat! After watching this individual for a while, we started to head further out. We headed to an area where whales had been seen yesterday and found 3 humpback whales! They were all swimming slowly at the surface, probably resting. We were able to have them all to ourselves for a while and they were not shy about coming up close. They didn't do any deep dives so we were able to watch their white pectoral fins slowly moving under the water. An incredible tour!

13:00 - One more great tour this week! We found the same whales we had found in the morning, and it was fantastic again. First, we saw the solitary humpback whale that was swimming on its own straight out of the harbour. It was doing shorter dives than before, so we could admire it a bit better. Next, we could see the blows of the three other humpbacks in the horizon, so we went that way, and it was as beautiful as it had been in the morning. Total count, 4 humpbacks. The great whales were super docile, and it was a joy to watch. It was so nice, especially in the context of the beautiful weather, that some passengers got very emotional. Success!

16:00 - In the afternoon, the wind had died down a bit for us so the sea was a little less choppy. We headed out into the bay optimistic after the encounters of the morning. We first found a humpback whale by itself but this individual was doing very long dives and travelling a lot in that time. We managed to see it twice and both times it did fluke dives for us but after that we decided to explore other areas. We then found the 3 humpback whales that have been spending the day together. They were still doing the same behavoiur of swimming very slowly at the surface but coming close to our boat a few times. We were able to see their white pectoral fins through the water and they also showed us their flukes! We saw that we knew 2 of the whales - Pep and Neila! A perfect end to the day!
