Whale Diary

12:00 - We were excited to get in our RIB boats and depart to sea, as we had received news that whales were sighted somewhat close to the shore. This was great, as it meant we could avoid the rougher sea conditions that were present today, further offshore. After we left the harbour, it didn'ttake us long to find our first cetaceans, as a small group of 3 to 5 white-beaked dolphins started swimming around our boat. Just a few minutes after finding these dolphins, we saw that a humpback whale was also swimming in the same area. We spent a while observing these 2 species, whose behaviours seemed to indicate they were hunting, or feeding away from the surface. Eventually, we left their presence and decided to check an area a few miles further south. This did pay out, as we found 2 more humpback whales there. These also seemed to be searching for food, surfacing for only a few seconds before diving and showing us their beautiful fluke. We then headed to Aukurey, one of our puffin islands, to spend some time with these cute birds, before heading back home.

14:00 - Sailing out this afternoon, we got surprised by the improving weather and coming sun, we ended up having a plentiful tour: seeing 4 humpback whales, we got multiple fluke dives from consecutive whales, with clear feeding behavior and many Arctic terns and black legged kittiwakes flying over the whales. We even managed to have one of them roll around, showing us its belly and pectoral slapping time and time again, minutes before we left.

16:00 -  We sailed out into the bay this afternoon, eager to have the same luck as in the previous tour and find some whales. The sea was slightly choppy, meaning that our passengers had a fun time as we braved the waves. We headed southwest, where some sightings had been recorded in the previous hours. However, before we arrived to our destination, we spotted blows on the horizon, a few hundred meters away towards our 2 o´clock. As we approached, we saw these belonged to 3 humpback whales. We recognized them as individuals who have been around here for a few weeks already. One of them was quite a popular whale around here, known locally as David Jones. We had an amazing time with this group, and, as our time came to an end, we set course to Akurey, the puffin island, where we did some bird-watching, before returning to Reykjavík.

20:00 -  We set sail into choppy seas with mostly cloudy skies overhead. We had a bumpy ride on the way out but it ended up being more than worth it as we managed to spot no less than 13 humpback whales! Some whales we same only as mere blows in the distance, while others we managed to have nice and close interactions. We spent most of our time with 4 individuals (on of them a whale called Davy Jones II) as they were feeding in the same area, interacting with eachother on and off. In their feeding we they went for many, very short dives, lifting their flukes nice and high. At some point, three of them also surfaced less than 20 meters away from us! To wrap things up after this interaction, we stopped by an area for just a few minutes with another 5 whales feeding and then we bumped back towards Reykjavik.
