Whale Diary

10:00 - It was an excellent tour this morning!! We started with a visit to our feathered friends in Puffin island, and we then continued our tour. After not much sailing we found the first Humpback Whale! It was a great start! It came up to the surface often, and we stayed with it for some time. We then got spotted 2 more humpbacks that were not far, and we moved on to them. That made a total of 3. They stayed and swam together, in sync, up and down the water, showing their flukes in unison. Everybody was delighted. On our way back we came accross a very friendly group of white beaked dolphins, around 10 of them, and it was a great end to the tour.

14:00 - It was overcast and good sea conditons as sailed out after a visit to the puffins at Akurey. We soon found 2 Humpback whales that were busy feeding and surfaced many times close to the boat and showed the fluke when they went for a dive, a lovely encounter! Further out in the bay we saw a pod of 4-5 White-beaked dolphins that gave us good views but did not show particular interest in the boat. On the way back we saw one of the earlier Humpback whales again and another one on the way back to harbour. Apart from the three Humpback whales seen up close there were several more in the area so probably at least 6 were seen on the tour.

16:00 - We sailed straight into the bay this afternoon. There were several Humpback whales very actively bubble net fishing and lunge feeding together, sometimes right next to the boat! Many Arctic terns were following the whales signalling to us where they were about to surface. It is difficult to say how many Humpbacks were in the area but apart from 4 seem feeding close to the boat there were several more at a distance so 7-8 at least in the area. There were also many seabirds fishing in the area including puffins coming up with Sand-eels in their bills. On the way back we stopped to visit the puffins at Akurey and Engey. Delighted we returned to harbout after a wonderful wildlife experience.
