Whale Diary

09:00 - We headed out into the wind and waves, hopeful that the day would bring some exciting encounters. We searched for a long time, but the ocean seemed strangely quiet. Eventually, we came across a few skittish white-beaked dolphins, which popped up briefly before disappearing again. Then we heard reports of a humpback whale closer to the harbour, so we changed course and headed in that direction. After another long wait, our patience finally paid off - we found it! The humpback was busy feeding, surfacing several times and giving us some wonderful views. We managed to watch it on a few occasions before it was time to turn back towards the harbour. It had been a long day on the water, but seeing the humpback at the end made the wait well worth it.

12:00 - With the same windy and wavy conditions, we headed straight back to the spot where we had left the humpback whale on our previous tour. And sure enough, it was still there - and still busy feeding! We spent quite some time with this individual, enjoying the show as it surfaced again and again. The whale was coming up frequently, and on a few occasions it surfaced surprisingly close to the boat, giving us some fantastic views. After spending plenty of time with the humpback, we used the remaining time to search the surrounding area for anything else. We did come across a few harbour porpoises, but they were rather skittish and disappeared almost as quickly as they appeared. With the sea still lively around us, we eventually turned back towards the harbour, happy to have had another great encounter with the humpback.

15:00 - The wind and waves made for a true Icelandic experience, adventurous and a bit wet! Not long after leaving the harbour, we spotted our first blow. A feeding humpback whale was surfacing all around, going for short dives and even coming very close to the boat! Its always a magical moment when we get to see this animals close up and this whale was not shy, showing its beautiful fluke a few times. After a while, we decided to continue our search and immediately spotted another humpback whale. This one we know very well, it was Harbour master! We observed this whale feeding before turning around and heading back with the ocean in our face, but full of new memories.
