Whale Diary

09:00 - The cool Icelandic air was blowing this morning as we set sail. With overcast skies and some rain, we were treated to a bright rainbow as we journeyed out into the bay! After a bit of a sail we came across a location where there were loads of seabirds feeding. It was a great place to stop and admire the views and see if any cetaceans would appear. As we were learning about our cetaceans, 2 white-beaked dolphins found our boat and came to explore! These individuals were very playful and kept circling around us. It was amazing to watch them surfing through the waves as we could see their entire bodies! They then started to jump right in front of us. As we were with our dolphins, we heard that our other RIB had seen more dolphins and a blow, so we continued. The dolphins that we were with decided to follow along with us! As we got closer we saw that there were about 20 more dolphins swimming around one humpback whale. This individual gave us a few nice surface sequences before diving below. When they resurfaced they were closer and we could see their face emerged through the water as they surfaced for air. After a very nice encounter we set our sights for port. On the way back we got pulled over by one minke whale swimming right in front of us. This individual was there and gone again and while we awaited them we had one harbor porpoise  surface once through the waves. As we were far out it was time to wave the sea goodbye and head back to port. What an adventurous morning!
