Species seen today: Humpback whale

Bird seen today

10:00 - The sun was out today as we started our trip in Faxafloi. We started with a short stop at Engey to see some puffins, there we saw about 20 on the rocks and floating on the water. After these nice 10 minutes observing those lovely sea birds we headed to the open ocean on the look for cetaceans. After about 30 minute of navigation we saw a humpback whale. This individual was really calm on the water, showing us some nice views on its fluke and also its body as it was calmly surfacing. After some nice moment with this animal we had to leave to go back toward the harbour. The wind had a bit picked up, but the ride was still enjoyable while riding through the waves.

12:00 - Conditions were already better when we left the harbour. We first had a stop at Engey were many puffins are coming every year to breed. They were on the rocks, flying and on the water so it was very easy to observe them. Then we left and went out in the bay direclty to the area where they were seen this morning. A mile before we reached the area a humpback whale appeared right in front of the boat! There was at least two humpbacks in the area and we could observe them well, probably feeding, going for frequent dives, sometimes lifting there tail out of the water. We also spotted a minke whale in the same area. We saw it surfacing a few times before disappearing. After a last nice fluke dive of one of the humpback whales we went back to the harbour.

14:00 - The wind calmed down this afternoon. We spotted a blow of a humpback whale and we could spend some lovely moments alone with this individual. He was surfacing very calmly, but when he dove underwater he sped up and surfaced many hundreds of meters away. With the long time the individual was above the water, we could easily catch up with him and catch some wonderful looks at the back and fluke from up close. After a few fluke dives we decided to check out a different individual. We admired it for some time until it was time to head to the puffin colony on Engey, where we got some close looks at the Atlantic puffins and other sea birds.
