Whale Diary

12:00 - We sailed out the harbor with warm weather and calm seas. Not even 5 minutes out, we saw our first of 4 minke whales. It surfaced once and then was gone. After a while it reappeared and then was circling us for 10 minutes. Then it left us, so we sailed out into the bay, where the waves were a little higher and it got a little rougher, but that's our nice icelandic sea, which is a fun ride and an experience you should take with you. Out in the bay we found 3 other minkes, which were quite shy, so we didn't see them very often. Also 1 white-beaked dolphin showed up, but we could only see his dorsal fin and then it was gone again. We then had a nice sail around and back to the harbor.

14:00 - This afternoon was a true adventure, we sailed out with slight grey conditions and a slightly choppy sea. Only 5 minutes in, we spotted 2 minke whales. They started off a little shy but eventually one came incredibly close to the boat! After this amazing encounter we did want to had out further, after a bit of a sail we heard a little rumour of something bigger! And bigger indeed it was - 2 humpback whales! They came up a few times, with one of them showing the fluke each time it went down! We could therefore tell one of them was Mr. Bubbles! A fan favourite that we have seen regularly for a few years now! We stayed a little bit but then headed somewhere else and found another humpback and a pod of curious white beaked dolphins! They were swapping between having a look at each boat, and came quite close to us a few times as well. It was at this moment in time that the sun also came out and shined down on us - so we had a humpback whale, dolphins and sunshine! We stayed as long as we could and then started heading back as we were running out of time!
