Whale Diary

10:00 - Another day of sun and beautiful calm seas! After stopping at the puffins, we headed out into the bay and it didn't take us long to find our first humpback whale! It was the same sleepy individual as yesterday with a lot of scars on its body. There were a few other boats around so we stayed and watched it a few times but then decided to move on and leave it to sleep in peace. Only a few minutes after, we found a small pod of 4 white-beaked dolphins, one of which was a small calf! Surprisingly, they came up very close to the boat! This doesn't happen very often when there's a young one in the group so was very special to witness. The pod then became a little bit more elusive, so we again decided to move on and search some new areas. We then found another humpback whale that was again very relaxed and with the bright sunshine we could easily see the bright white pectoral fins through the water! In the distance we could see another blow of a third humpback that was feeding! It was great to see some different behaviour as it was moving a lot faster through the water and changing directions a lot as well. Then unfortunately, we were starting to run out of time so we had to start heading back to the harbour but on our way back we found the smallest minke whale I have ever seen! It was even curious of the boat and circled us a couple of times before disappearing, an amazing end to the morning!

14:00 - The weatherwas fantastic as we set sail in the faxafloi bay. First we went to an area where we had seen whales previously, but without success. we kept of looking for a while deep inside the bay, passing through bird patches. Eventually as we changed area we stumbles across a pod of 6 or so white beaked dolphins, the dolphins disappeared very fast, so we made our way to another area where we saw another pod of 5 dolphins, much more friendly. We observed them for some time and we decided to go look for another species: After 15 minutes, a humpback whale appeared and dove in front of us. We got to observe it  a few times and beautiful views of its tail as it went for a deeper dive before we headed back to the harbor. A tricky trip but finally coming back with happy faces after these last 2 encounters.
