Species seen today: Minke Whale, harbour porpoise

Birds seen today:
Today our whale watching at 1000 and 1200, and all of our puffin watching is confirmed. Unfortunately, the tours at 1400, 1600 & 2000 are cancelled due to weather conditions.

10:00 - This morning the weather improved so we were able to go out, since yesterday due to the weather conditions everything was cancelled. As usual the first stop was at Akurey to see some atlantic puffins and then the whale watching tour started. We started by going to some locations where we normally are lucky and find some animals. The sea birds were everywhere and they are what we call bioindicators wich means that when a lot of sea birds are in a area there is a lot of fish around and maybe something under the water. We stopped to see the sea birds for some time with some hopes that a whale would appear as well. We probably spotted 4-6 minke whales during the tour but they all disappeared quickly and were not resurfacing. We also saw 3-4 harbour porpoises showing briefly their triangular dorsal fin over the surface. After some time we had to start to return to the harbour and since the sightings were difficult we decided to give complimentary tickets to the passengers.

12:00 - We set off to one of the Reykjavík islands, Akurey, to check on the lovely dancing puffins. After that, we headed to the middle of Faxaflói in search of something bigger than a cute bird. Some 20 minutes in and we had a very good sighting of a minke whale passing by close to a big flock of birds. It came really close to the boat to check us out! We had another one not too far doing splashes where another flock of birds was, it was lunge feeding, a very effective and speedy strategy that some whales do! We kept on going further north and we found another 4 minke whales in the area, all of them nice and stinky. The time was over and the wind was picking up, so we started to head back to land. When we were really close to land we had another minke whale and a small pod of 3 to 4 harbour porpoises. A nice surprise and also a nice send-off to this very nice tour!
