10:00 - This morning we dressed up warm in cozy overalls and put on our sunglasses to brace the windy summer conditions. Full of excitement, we headed straight out into the bay to see if we could spot any signs of whales. Soon after leaving, plenty of Atlantic puffins appeared! They were flying next to us, giving the feeling that they were leading our way out to a big tall blow! As we got closer, we discovered that the blow came from a humpback whale that was spending short intervals deep diving around the area. We were lucky to be able to observe its large fluke just in front of us several times, giving us a nice glimpse of the backside print. As the whale dove down, we observed the beautiful two peninsulas bordering Faxaflói bay, and admired Snæfellsjökul that was lightning up in the distance. Then, another blow! We moved around and got several more great glimpses of the humpback whale. Suddenly, it rolled over on its side, showing the underside of both the fluke and pectoral fin to us. After a beautiful time with this individual, we made a return towards the city again to check out the Atlantic puffins by the island of Akurey. When we arrived, there there were puffins all around us, flying to and from the island, but also resting up on the sea surface. We also caught some glimpses of great skuas, sneakily trying to steal the fish from the puffins as they returned to the island to feed their chicks. Windswept and full of smiles we returned to the harbor with beautiful new memories.
