Whale Diary

09:00 - What an awesome day out on the water! The sun was shining bright with clear skies, and the sea was almost as calm as it gets. We set sail and after about half an hour, we had our first sighting—a minke whale cruising along, doing some shallow dives, probably snacking on some fish. We kept moving and, just a few minutes later, another minke popped up. This one decided to come in for a closer look, and everyone on board was buzzing with excitement as it surfaced right next to us. We spotted a third minke too, though this one was a bit more elusive and didn’t hang around. Then, to top it all off, we found a playful pod of 5-7 white-beaked dolphins! They put on a show, riding the bow and leaping out of the water. It was the perfect end to a perfect day. We sailed back to harbor, everyone still buzzing from the dolphin show and the stunning weather.

10:00 - The sun was shining bright this morning as we sailed out into the bay. There was still a bit of swell so on our way out it was a bit bumpy but once we were in the areas where we commonly found the whales, the sea was much calmer. After a little searching we found a minke whale! We were able to see this individual a few times before it disappeared under the waves. We moved on and looked in another area. Here we found a pod of around 10 white-beaked dolphins. They were staying in a fairly tight group together and we soon saw why. In the pod were 2 very young, very small calves! They were adorable! They even tried doing little jumps out of the water a couple of times. They must have only been a few weeks old so it was amazing to see them! When the pod decided to move on from us we started heading away and quickly found 2 more minke whales. We were able to watch both of these minkes for a little while before we had to start heading back into the harbour.

12:00 - The wind had picked up a bit from the morning, but the sky was still sunny, so we were all set for a great trip. After about 40 minutes, we got lucky and found a minke whale that was super curious about our boat—it came really close, giving everyone a good look. But the real fun started when we spotted a pod of 8-10 white-beaked dolphins. These guys were a blast, jumping around, riding the bow, and even swimming right under our boat. The vibe on board was pure excitement, and with the weather being so nice, it felt like the perfect day out on the water.

13:00 - This afternoon, the wind had picked up a little which made our journey out into the bay a bit bumpy but still enjoyable with the bright sunshine. The cetaceans were a little more elusive during this tour and we had to search for a bit longer than previously before we found our first animal. We first found a very shy minke whale which we were only able to see once. Then after some more searching, we found another minke. This one was a little more curious of the boat and came very close to us! We were able to see it a few time before we had to start heading back towards the harbour.

15:00 - Despite the weather taking a turn for the worse with overcast skies, stronger winds, and a bit of swell, we headed out with high hopes. After some searching, we managed to spot one minke whale, but this little guy was super shy, only giving us the briefest of glimpses before disappearing into the waves. Since the minke wasn’t in the mood to hang out, we decided to offer everyone complimentary tickets so they could come back for another shot at the action. Fingers crossed for better luck next time!

16:00 - Our last tour of the day was a bit bumpier as the wind had picked up a bit throughout the day. As we headed out into the bay, we were still optimistic that we would be able to find some cetaceans. After searching many different areas, we found a pod of around 5 white-beaked dolphins. They were spread over a large area but they took turns coming up close to the boat and looking up at us as we looked down on them! The water was clear enough that we could see their whole bodies through the water as they passed the boat. They were definitely enjoying swimming around the boat as they spent time up at the bow, riding the waves of the boat! As the dolphins got tired of us and started to swim away, we started to run out of time and had to start heading back in to the harbour.
