Whale Diary

11:00 - This morning, we had beautiful calm seas - perfect for whale watching! It didn't take us long to find our first pod of white-beaked dolphins! There was around 5 individuals and they were very curious of the boats. They all came right up to the boats and started bow riding! We could see their striped bodies through the water as they swam beside us too. Eventually after playing with them for a while, we decided to move on and search other areas. Soon, we found another pod of dolphins, this one had around 7 individuals in it but was a lot more elusive. We approached them a couple of times and managed to get a little closer but they weren't interested in us today. We heard from another boat that they had seen a minke whale so we headed over but couldn't spot it again. As we headed back into the harbour, we stopped to see some adorable puffins before the tour ended.

14:00 - In the afternoon, we decided to follow a tip off from one of our fellow guides on a day off that had seen blows from land. We headed into Hvalfjörður, somewhere that we don't usually go, to see if we could find the source of these blows. Soon after entering the fjord, we saw a larger than usual pod of 7 harbour porpoises. They were also more curious than usual and spent a little while circling around our boats and surfacing often. This was a real treat to see the porpoises so well! We moved further into the fjord and saw a blow! We had found 2 humpback whales! They were in separate areas but we were able to spend time with them both. One was only in 15 meters of water and was lunge feeding! So cool to see so close to land! Eventually, we had to leave and head back into the harbour but not before a perfect fluke dive in front of our boats.
