Whale Diary

09:00 - The morning brought us a beautiful sunrise and we were excited to go out! It was a bit choppy, so we enjoyed bouncing over the waves before spotting our first whale. This elusive minke whale surfaced 2 times before disappearing so we decided to continue and we spotted a blow not soon after. This one blow turned into 3 humpback whales and 4-5 white-beaked dolphins! Seeing two species together and interacting is always very special, but three humpbacks is not something we see every day. The whales were very active, rolling around, trumpeting, even pectoral slapping! We got to see some magnificent flukes dives, with the dolphins jumping around as well. Moving to an area were other boats had spotted something, we found a fourth humpback! This was a smaller one, going for a long deep dive. Just as we were about to leave, the whale surfaced and swam right up to our boat. The entire body of the whale was visible trough the surface, allowing us to rare glimpse to their underwater life. As if that was not enough, we found two more humpback whales, also together with a small pod of dolphins! It was an incredible tour and an amazing start to our day!

12:00 - The sun was hiding behind the clouds as we went out again this afternoon. We went in the direction where we saw this whales this morning and as we were having a look around, a big splash in the distance caught our attention! A humpback whale was breaching over and over again, and we got to witness this amazing show for quite some time. Eventually it seems to calm down, because a pod of 5 white-beaked dolphins suddenly showed up next to the whale! They came very close to the boat and then something incredibly special happened; the humpback whale turned, put their face out of the water and looked at us, as if they were just as interested in us as we were at them. Being observed by these gentle giants is something that only happens a handful of times and it never seizes to amaze. A little later we spotted a pair of humpbacks feeding, lifting their giant fluke out of the water. After that, we went for loop around the bay and spotted another pair of humpbacks, bringing the total to 5! These whales passed right in front of the boat and after a last gracious fluke dive, we waved our whales goodbye and enjoyed our adventurous ride back to the harbour.

15:00 - After two amazing trips we were excited to see what the ocean had in store for us on this last one. It did not disappoint! On our way out we were having a lot of fun bouncing and flying over the waves before we spotted a blow on the horizon. There were two humpback whales and one of them was tail lobbing! Throwing their huge tail around like it was nothing. When we got closer we realized we knew one of them very well, it was Neila! These whales did not mind our presence and surfaced very close to boat. We even got sprayed with their blow multiple times! After this incredible encounter we decided to venture a bit further and then we found a third humpback whale when it breached right in front of the boat! It was a one time wonder but we still had an amazing time with this whale when it swam right up to the boat and we could see the entire body trough the surface. Suddenly next to our largest cetacean, the tiniest one also appeared. A couple harbour porpoises popped up in front of the whale and the sheer difference in size was almost comical. Then in the distance, a fourth humpback whale breached twice! It was a perfect ending to our tour, so we turned around, cruised past the islands and the skyline of Reykjavik before heading home.
