Whale Diary

10:00 - We went out in the best of sunshine on this beautiful day. Just a few minutes out of the harbor, we found 4 minke whales feeding close to the isles in the bay. They came quite close to our boat and so we got a good look at them before we went out further out to see what the bay was holding for us. Splashes on the surface gave away a pod of around 6 white-beaked dolphins. They were a bit illusive this time thus it was a bit tricky to get closer and stay with them. Nonetheless we managed to get some nice photos as they swam along out boat for a short time. On our way back we saw some more minke whales before we returned to the harbor. Overall it was a great tour on a great day.

12:00 - With sunny skies, we sailed out of the harbour and quickly found our first animals! In between the islands of Engey and Viðey, we found 3 minke whales! There was a lot of fish on our fish finder! This paired with their behaviour made us sure that these whales were feeding. They were fast at the surface but didn't take much notice of us so a few times one of the larger individuals surfaced very close to our boat! We even got glimpses of their "mittens" through the water! After watching them for a little while, we headed out further into the bay in search of other animals. We got a very quick glimpse at a couple of harbour porpoises when they cut across in front of our boat! However, after we slowed down, we didn't spot them again. Unfortunately, there were no other cetaceans in the bay wanting to be seen so, after stopping by the minkes close to land again, we headed back into the harbour.

14:00 - This afternoon we sailed out into the sunny bay of faxafloi! Not long after departure we already spotted 3 minke whales! These were very friendly minkes that came up often and close to our boat! Minkes are notorious for being on the elusive side but these three were amazing! We stayed with the for a little bit before deciding it was time to venture out further. We sailed a few minutes before spotting 3 harbour porpoises but they were on the quick side and we did not see them again. We therefore continued on our journey but with no luck. We searched as long as we had time for but then decided to come back and see the minkes a few more times before heading back home. One of the minkes was even lunge feeding and was swimming along us for a while too! What a special way to end the tour.

15:00 - The sun was still shining this afternoon, and as with the previous tours, our first top was between the islands. We found 2-3 minke whales still feeding in the area. There was one especially small minke that was definitely a younger individual. We stayed in this area for a little while, as the minkes fed around us. After a while, we decided to move on and return to our search. After sailing for a little while, our captain spotted a pod of 10 white-beaked dolphins. They were very relaxed and were slowly swimming through the waves. A few times, they swam underneath the boat to play hide and seek and surprise us on the other side! After another boat joined us, we kept sailing and searched some new areas. However, apparently our luck had run out, and we didn't find any other cetaceans before our time ran out, so we had to go back to the harbour.
