Whale Diary

10:00 - We had a rainy start this morning but after stopping by one of the puffin islands, the skies cleared and we had wonderful sunshine. It didn't take us long to find a humpback whale! This individual was veeery calm at the surface, sometimes it was just logging! We were able to have a few close encounters with the whale once it started to wake up again as well. Once, the humpback started pec slapping right next to the boat! The 5 meter tall fin standing straight out of the water next to us! Almost every time it came to the surface, we could see its bright white pectoral fins through the water - another beautiful morning on the water in Faxaflói bay.

14:00 - This afternoon, we had another amazing tour! We first stopped at Engey to see the adorable puffins and then continued out into the bay. We started off with the same humpback whale that we saw in the morning. It was doing the same behaviour, staying quite close to the surface and doing shallow dives. This meant we were able to see it very close a few times and often! We then decided to move on as another whale watching boat had seen a second humpback. This individual was super curious! It came right up to us and rolled on its back, showing off its bright white belly! Then it started spy hopping! This is when the whale sticks its head out of the water to watch us while we're watching it! It was amazing! We unfortunately then were running out of time and had to head back into the harbour bur it was an incredible afternoon!
