Whale Diary

10:00 - The sea conditions were perfect as we sailed out after a quick stop for puffins at Akurey. We soon found a Minke Whale that did not show again so we decided to move on. We then encountered 2 different pods of white-beaked dolphins but both were rather shy so we went on searching. We then found a larger pod of very playful white-beaked dolphins that followed the boat and we all got amazing views. There were several minke whales in the same area including Humpy a familiar Minke Whale that has been sighted in the bay for many years. Another great tour.

11:00 - The sea conditions today were amazing! Flat, calm seas made us able to see far out into the bay to spot the animals. After stopping for puffins at Engey, we soon found an area full of activity. In every direction there were white-beaked dolphins and minke whales. All the individuals were spread out in one large area. A few dolphins became curious of the boat and came up close to us, bow riding and jumping! We were also lucky to have 2 shy minkes surface near our boat as well. While waiting for minkes we also saw 2 small pods of harbour porpoises. The bay is full of life today!

14:00 - Just like in the morning, the sea was completely flat. We headed back to the area where we had good sightings in the morning. On our way we found a pod of 3 white-beaked dolphins. They were playful at first, coming up close to us and surfacing fast next to the boat. After a while, however, they decided to leave and we carried on to the active area from the morning. When we arrived, it was the same as before, full of minkes and dolphins spread out in a big area. Too many to count!

15:00 - Great conditions again in the afternoon. There was a lot of life in the bay with birds and cetaceans feeding in an extensive area. We probably sighted upwards of a dozen minke whales but none of them surfaced very close to the boat. On the other hand we encountered several pods of very lively white-beaked dolphins that approached the boat, swam under it, rode the bow wave and breached! A great wildlife encounter.
