Whale Diary

10:00 - We sailed out in a bit cloudy bay of Faxafloi. The swell was not too high and there were not too many white caps so the conditions were good to spot any kind of splashes on the surface or blows in the distance. On the way out we encountered a rather elusive curved dorsal fin that probably belonged to a Minke Whale. It surfaced twice and the lucky ones on board got to see it. We decided to continue our search a bit further out in the bay and check out an area where a Humpback Whale was seen earlier today. We soon spotted a large blow and tried to approach carefully. And indeed, there were 2 humpback whales within that area. One of them surfaced repeatedly close to our boat and we recognized that individual easily because of its unique dorsal fin. It seemed very calm and did not move very fast. We had a great encounter with that Humpback Whale and everybody enjoyed the encounter with this gentle giant. On the way back we stopped by the island of Engey to watch the Atlantic Puffins. They were all around us and came very close. Very enjoyable observations as well.
