Whale Diary

09:00 - The weather was sunny, with a bit of wind and some swell, but we were still eager to head out and see what we could find. We sailed out, searching high and low, hoping for some exciting sightings. The sun was shining, but the waves were making it tricky to spot anything. Despite our best efforts, the marine mammals seemed to be playing hide and seek today, and unfortunately, they won this round. Even though we didn’t have any luck this morning, we didn’t want the adventure to end on a low note. To make sure everyone gets another chance to experience the magic of whale watching, we handed out complimentary tickets. We hope to see everyone back on a calmer day when the whales decide to come out and play!

10:00 - It was a grey but bright morning as we sailed into the bay. The winds coming into the bay were making our journey out a little bumpy but this just added to our excitement! After searching many different areas, we hadn't found any cetaceans... until we saw some splashes amongst the white caps! We managed to see 2-3 white-beaked dolphins swimming very fast through the waves. Soon after we unfortunately lost them in the swell but then we heard over the radio that another boat had seen something. We headed over and saw a humpback whale! It was surfacing frequently and we managed to see two fluke dives before we ran out of time and had to head back to the harbour.

15:00 - We set out on a sunny day, though the wind had picked up from the morning, giving us a bit more swell to navigate. After about 20 minutes of sailing, we struck gold—a humpback whale! It was doing short dives, likely feeding, as we noticed a couple of Arctic terns and a flock of black-legged kittiwakes eagerly following it, diving for the same fish. The real excitement kicked in when the humpback treated us to some spectacular pectoral slaps and even some lunge feeding. At one point, it came so close to the boat that you could almost feel the spray—everyone was absolutely thrilled!

16:00 - This afternoon the waves had actually calmed a little and the sun had come out as well! After sailing out past the islands, it didn't take us long to find our first cetacean. In a sheltered area, we found a humpback whale! This individual was feeding in a large area and was constantly followed by birds. It came very close to our boat many times and even swam under us as it was feeding! A couple times the whale also lunge fed through the water! An amazing tour to end the day!
