Whale Diary

09:00 - This morning was a bit grey, but the sea was flat calm and perfect for spotting wildlife. It didn't take us long before we found our first cetaceans, a large pod of around 15 white-beaked dolphins. They were spread out over a large area but some of them were curious of the boat and came right up to us and swam under and around us. After watching them for a while, we decided to move on and then saw another pod of around 10 white-beaked dolphins but these ones were feeding and were not very interested in us. In the distance we then saw a blow so headed over to it and saw a humpback whale! This individual was very sleepy and coming to the surface very slowly but it still showed off its tail for us a few times. In between waiting for the humpback to surface and between seeing the dolphins, we also saw around 5 minke whales!

10:00 - We went out with glassy sea and cold temperatures. We didn't have to go far before we saw the first Minke Whale. It was surfacing twice, when we heard there is a Humpback in the area. So we left the Minke and went for the Humpback. After about 2,5 miles we arrived and also didn't have to wait for long. The Humpback Whale surfaced and everyone was in awe! We joined it for quite some time, before other boats joined. Then we left and went for something else. We did find something else, we found a pod of 7 White Beaked Dolphins. They were playing around the boat and one of them displayed a very nice jumping behavior right next to our boat. After a while we had to say goodbye to the dolphins and had to head back to the harbor. On the way back there were about 3 Minke Whales crossing our path.

12:00 - It was still perfect conditions at sea this afternoon as we headed out of the harbour. After passing the islands and heading into the bay, we found a small, young minke whale. This individual came fairly close to us a few times - maybe a little curious but still wary as a youngster. Once the whale decided to swim away from us, we moved on and next found a pod of around 7 white-beaked dolphins. This pod was curious at first as well but then started to play hide-and-seek with us. They would let us watch them for a bit and then would disappear before popping up right behind us a few minutes later! After a while, they also started swimming away and we headed to the area where we had seen the other wildlife this morning. There, we found 2 sleepy humpback whales. They were lazily swimming side-by-side and were coming to the surface very slowly but many times. A few times they came up quite close to the boat! It was great to watch them until we unfortunately had to head back into the harbour after an amazing tour.

13:00 - The sea was still very calm and it was amazing cold weather. As we headed out we found 2 Minke Whales around us. They were surfacing just once, so we kept going. We found 2 Humpback Whales traveling together and one of them came up quite often and came super close to the boat ! We watched them for a while and since they were resting, we left them in peace after a while. Next animals we found were some more Minke Whales, in total 5, but they were all not in the mood for socializing. We had to go back anyways, so we left. On the way back we found 3 different pods of Harbor Porpoises, each had about 4 individuals. Everyone got back very happy, including the crew. :)

16:00 - We headed out with glassy sea again, which is very nice and smooth. Not far and we saw the first 3 Minke Whales in close proximity to each other. They were quite elusive so we didn't stop. We were heading for something bigger. We wanted to find the 2 Humpback Whales, from the previous tour and we did! :) They were resting and taking very long dives, longer than usual. Our patience was rewarded with very pretty flukes! One of the Humpbacks is called Pep. After a while we saw a 3rd Humpback in the distance and decided to go for a try. We could only manage to see it from a distance, it wasn't in the mood for company, but our beloved Minke Whales were all around us the whole time. Surfacing a few times, showing us their cute snouts. In total we probably saw around 12! However it was time to head back to harbor, but we did it with happy and a little frozen faces. :D
