Whale Diary

11:00 - With some light snowfall, we set out into the bay. Right away we found a pair of humpback whales. This pair has been around our port for a few days now and so it was great to see them still here. With a bit of boat traffic, we decided to head out and see if anyone else was farther out in the bay. Although there were many seabirds, no cetaceans were found and so we went back to say hello to our humpbacks. With no more boats around it was magical to have just us with this pair. They were rather sleepy and spent a lot of time resting at the surface. It was picturesque to have our humpbacks resting at the surface, with snow topped mountains in the background. They then treated us to a fluke dive! After multiple surface sequences and another fluke dive it was time to head back to port. What a great start to the morning!

14:00 - This afternoon we bundled up and set sail. Right outside the harbor wall was our pair of humpback whales that we saw this morning! As we were watching this pair, it started to snow, providing us with a perfect winter scene. After a few surface sequences and a fluke dive, we waved this pair goodbye and went to see if anyone else was out and about. After a little while we spotted one harbor porpoise. This individual was quite elusive and after two surfaces they were off again. So we too set sail again. Although there were many seabirds out in the bay, it was rather quiet regarding our cetaceans. Thus, we came back to say hello again to our humpback pair. It was amazing to glide along on the water as the whales swam to our left. For the last few surface sequences, it was just us with this pair, which was really special. To end off this wonderful viewing, we got a double fluke dive! With that, we waved our whales goodbye and set sail back to port. What a great tour!
