Whale Diary

10:00 - The sea conditions were perfect as we sailed out after a quick stop for puffins at Akurey. Soon we encountered a pod of a few white-beaked dolphins but they were rather shy and many boats around so we decidec to look elsewhere. After a long search we found several minke whales, there were at least 4 animals around and they surfaced several times close to the boat so we all got some great views. We then found another pod of white-beaked dolphins that were very playful and approached the boat. There was a small baby in the pod. The dolphins breached many times and rode the bow wave of the boat, amazing! In the end we ran out of time and and headed for harbour after a lovely encounter with the cetaceans.

11:00 - This morning the sun had gone but it was still good sea conditions as we headed out. We headed close to where we were lucky yesterday and soon found a pod of white-beaked dolphins. They were pretty playful, coming to the boat a few times and even jumping! After a while though, they got bored of us and moved on. While we were watching them, we had also seen a flocks of birds in the distance so we headed in that direction. When we got there we managed to see at least 3 minke whales. However, these minkes were being quite shy. Most of the time we just saw them once before they disappeared for a while. Twice we did get very lucky though because they came up very close to the boat!

14:00 - After a stop at Engey to see the puffins, we headed back to the area we were in this morning and had similar luck! We first came across a small pod of white-beaked dolphins. They were spread out and some came close to the boat but they didn't seem very interested in us. We then found a Minke Whale that came up right next to the boat, giving us all a jump! After that, however, it disappeared below the surface and we didn't see it again. We were seeing plenty of other minkes though and the dolphins were spreading out more so we were seeing glimpses of both right up until we had to head back to the harbour.

15:00 - It was raining a bit as we headed out in the afternoon but the sea conditions were still very good. We soon found a pod of 5-6 white-beaked dolphins that were inquisitive about the boat, swam under it and surfaced all around the boat so we all got fantastic views. After a while we moved on and after some searching we saw a large mixed flock of seabirds actively feeding. There wer many gannets diving, alcids, different gulls, manx shearwaters, fulmars and arctic skuas. Under all the birds were 2 minke whales lunge feeding, often surfacing sideways showing the underside and half of the tail fluke. We enjoyed this amazing spectacle for a long time. On the way back we made a short stop for puffins at Akurey before returning to harbour after a great trip.
